Roland/EDIROL

Project: CG-8 Video Synthesizer
Date: March 2005
Japanese engineers asked me to develop still images and patches for the new Edirol CG-8 video synthesizer. I extracted high quality stills from video, in addition to shooting original still images. The challenge was in a week's time to becoming familiar with over 200 effects the CG-8 has built into its system and then creating stills that maximize the capabilities of the unit. Xarene created the 'stamps' for each project (stamps are alpha channels that can be layered on top of the moving images). The patches are included with every CG-8 sold world-wide. www.edirol.com

For the evening Remix Hotel After-party at Webster Hall, I created custom still images of graffiti and urban landscape for the CG-8 Visual Synthesizer and triggered them live during Public Enemy’s set.

Pioneer

Project: DVJ Beta Test
Date: 2003
Japanese engineers from Pioneer electronics came to the Dimension7 studio to show off this new talked about pitch control DVD player and to get feedback. Numerous Video Salon attendees showed up to get a glimpse of this soon to be released product.

Project: DVJ Music Video
Date: 2004
I was asked to create a music video that allowed the DVJ to be the editor and to highlight the DVJ’s special scratching capabilities. The soundtrack is by Alaric Burns [Extra Sensory Projection]. Every scene in the video shows predictable movements so the DVJ could be scratched like a record and the viewer could see and hear the scratching. A lot of VJ content is often too abstract and it’s hard to determine the direction of objects in motion. This music video, Girl in the Pod, was shot around San Francisco with Jamie Duggan rolling a large pod around the city. A copy of Girl in the Pod is sold with each DVJ worldwide.

VJ PROJECTS
Video Salon

Video Salon is an open community of visual artists representing SF's thriving VJ scene. Video Salon is YOU.

Video artists come together monthly to share ideas, show their work and collaborate with other artists in an informal and social setting. The event is hosted at Dimension7, a San Francisco VJ institution.

We have 3 video mixing stations setup for anyone and everyone to show their own work. Mix video live to the DJs or do your own thing.Video Salon embraces a broad spectrum of time based visual artists including CG artists, experimental film makers, live visual performance artists and installation builders.

Video Salon strives to promote technical experimentation and aesthetic development within our community. We create an open dialog encouraging mutually beneficial critique, cross-pollination and collaboration.

Video RIOT!

Video RIOT! is a special installment of Video Salon. It is an intense collective projection experience, inspired by a five year series of monthly events that cater to the local VJ scene. In 2002 Video Riot brought out an estimated 500 people, over 70 artists and 40 volunteers, 30 projectors, 2 laser crews, 1 intelligent lighting installation, 7 generators and one pirate radio transmitter to a vacant parking lot in SoMa.

A cross between an edgy electronic tailgate party and a real-time drive-in multiplex, Video Riot! showcases San Francisco's homegrown VJ community. Artists create a massive outdoor wall (1 city block wide)of projected images across from the D7 studio. We try to include a broad spectrum of artists including computer graphics artists, experimental film makers, live visual performance artists and new media installation builders to come and show their work. We want to actively promote technical experimentation and aesthetic development within the VJ cmmunity.

Attendees to tune into the simultaneous radio broadcast by DJs, Alaric and Amy O.

VJ Battle

2 Artists head to head on two screens; 1 DJ plays a 3:30 minute track. The first 30 seconds are not judged. At the end of 3 minutes the audience will judge the two artists by using cell phones to send a text message choosing either 1 or 2. A graph will appear on the screen showing the outcome of the votes. The winning artists will advance to the next round.

The audience will judge by:
Composition: How well the images are put together
Original style: Originality is important but original content is not required. There will be a lot of other VJs in the audience voting and most of them know of the commercially released content.
Visual interpretation of the music: Either by algorithmic or human beat mixing, metaphoric or juxposition of content.

2004 VJ Battle, held in conjunction with SIGGRAPH, was sponsored by EDIROL, ATi, Red Bull and IdN magazine.

VJ Book 'vE-"jA
After 2 years and numerous publisher rejection letters, our book, 'vE-"jA, was finally published December 2006.

vE-jA is a global snapshot of VJing and live audio-video. The book covers 40 international artists with 400+ colour images and 50+ movies and clips on an accompanying DVD and web downloads. Regionally organized, the book showcases VJing and live A/V not as an isolated art phenomenon for geeks, but as a global art movement with sophisticated creators and audiences alike. The organization of the book in this manner has lead to discoveries of the differences and similarities in the devlopment of the art including the influence of specific urban styles, political and social states, cultural influences, as well as hardware and software development and influences in specific regions. Introductory essay by Marius Watz brings forth the role of synchronicity of audio and video technology in cinematic performances; Barry Munsterteiger, Interactive Media Group Senior Designer for Apple Inc., focuses on the role of art in the evolution of technology; Grant Davis (VJ Culture) provides supportive information on VJ specific hardware and software. In addition, essays by contributing artists cover local cultural aspects influencing VJ scenes globally and provide insight on the inflluences and productivity of cities such as London, Helsinki, Barcelona, Tokyo and general scenes of US, Austria, France, Netherlands and Australia.

Cube
A 5ft x 3.6ft cube made of translucent fabric and PVC tubing. The Cube rotates off of a ceiling mounted mirror ball motor. Two video projectors are used to project the same video image onto the cube at 180degree angles. The translucent material allows the image to be viewed on both sides of the cube allowing the two video projectors to project four images.

The video is original content created and looped for the rotating cube. A girl painted gold holds lotus position as she sits on a platform and rotates around at the same speed as the motor used for the cube. The combination of the video and cube rotating at the same speed but opposite directions creates a mezmorizing 3D effect that morphs images into each other.

Circles
Twelve bicycle rims have been recycled to create multiple interactive screens.

Four rows of three vertically hung bicycle rims with white fabric stretched over them produce twelve individual screens. Custom video clips are masked into twelve small circles using motion graphic software After Effects and are sent to one video projector by either a DVDR or by real-time a controller that triggers the clips via a keyboard. The video projector is placed at a precise distance from the circular screens producing a video wall effect.

Participants of the exhibit are allowed to spin the circles and walk in-between them as they can rotate and twirl freely. The spinning effect causes the video images to morph and mutant into collage of light.

Mirrors
Four side view mirrors removed from four Ford Taurus cars save been salvaged and reconstructed to move images around a room.

Using the push button controllers from the armrest of the Ford Taurus the controllers have been re-wired and placed in a custom made display panel. Each controller moves one mirror in vertical and horizontal positions. All four can move at the same time.

A single video projector is placed a few feet from the mirrors projecting video that has been created to produce 4 separate images. Each image is projected onto one mirror allowing all four seperate images to be seen at anytime.

Using Arkaos software and a midi controller keyboard the participants can trigger the video by playing the keys on the keyboard at the same time control the motion of the images via the control panel.
